Amazon Web Services Announces “Multi-AZ” for Relational Database Service

Enables users to replicate Database Instances to multiple Availability Zones for enhanced availability and data durability

Amazon Web Services LLC on Tuesday announced “Multi-AZ” for the Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), a new deployment option for Amazon RDS that enables users to replicate Database Instances to multiple Availability Zones for enhanced availability and data durability. With Multi-AZ, each update made to an Amazon RDS Database Instance (“DB Instance”) is automatically replicated to a standby in another Availability Zone. Availability Zones are distinct, physically-separate locations with independent infrastructure engineered to be insulated from failures in other Availability Zones. In the event of planned database maintenance or unplanned service disruption, Amazon RDS will automatically failover to the standby so that database operations can resume quickly. New or existing Amazon RDS DB instances can easily take advantage of the new Multi-AZ deployment option with a single API call. “True reliability, availability, and data durability have been out of reach for many database users deploying MySQL on premise, since running in multiple data centers can be complex and costly,” said Raju Gulabani, Vice President of Database Services, Amazon Web Services. “Multi-AZ for Amazon RDS changes that, dramatically reducing database downtime without requiring additional work from customers.”

Amazon RDS makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud, giving users access to the full capabilities of a familiar MySQL database. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while managing time-consuming database administration tasks, freeing users to focus on their applications and their business. Multi-AZ for Amazon RDS creates an identical up-to-date copy (“synchronous replica”) of a DB Instance in a separate Availability Zone. Synchronous replication ensures that a standby instance is ready in the event of disruption in one Availability Zone or in the case of DB Instance failure. In either case, Amazon RDS will automatically failover to the standby, so that database operations can be resumed very quickly without administrative intervention. Multi-AZ deployments also provide enhanced availability during planned operations like DB Instance backups, patching, or instance size scaling (and de-scaling).

Multi-AZ deployments of Amazon RDS provide the fault tolerance required by mission critical applications, like those at the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab. In order to support dozens of missions and instruments that redefine the edge of space exploration and earth sciences, NASA JPL strives to increase application uptime with cross data center redundancy, synchronous replication, and transparent failovers. The Office of the Chief Information Officer at NASA JPL now plans to expand their use of Amazon RDS by leveraging the Multi-AZ deployments to meet these requirements.

“AWS has made it possible to scale our social gaming platform to handle upwards of 50 million page views and a half million users playing every day. Amazon RDS makes it much easier to scale our service to support our growth," said Yasuhiro Horiuchi, CTO at gumi Inc. “With the addition of the Multi-AZ feature, we now look to take advantage of the availability and durability benefits of replication, using the same familiar RDS APIs."

A Rock Star Faculty, Top Keynotes, Sessions, and Top Delegates!
Cloud Expo 2010 West, November 1-4, Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, California will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading Cloud industry players in the world.

The growth and success of Cloud Computing will be on display at the upcoming Cloud Expo conferences and exhibitions in Prague June 21-22 and Santa Clara November 1-4.

The recent Cloud Expo at the Javits Center in New York City was the largest Cloud Computing conference ever produced, more sponsors, exhibitors and delegates than all other Cloud events of the year combined!

The four-day Santa Clara event will attract more than 6,000 delegates from 48 countries and over 200 sponsors and exhibitors on a 120,000 sq ft show floor, larger than Cloud Expo 2010 East, New York City event!

All main layers of the Cloud ecosystem will be represented in the6th and 7th International Cloud Expo - the infrastructure players, the platform providers, and those offering applications, and they'll all be here to speak, sponsor, exhibit and network.

"Cloud Expo was announced on February 24, 2007, the day the term ‘cloud computing' was coined," said Fuat Kircaali, founder and chairman of SYS-CON Events, Inc. "Cloud has become synonymous with ‘computing' and ‘software' in two short years, and this event has become the new PC Expo, Comdex, and InternetWorld of our decade. By 2012, more than 50,000 delegates per year will be attending Cloud Expo."
